Paragliding World Cup 2026/27 Season Opens in Gemona, Italy

The 2026/27 Paragliding World Cup season launches this week in Gemona del Friuli, Italy, running from July 25 to August 1. This prestigious event marks the return of one of the circuit’s most beloved venues to the international competition calendar.

Situated at the edge of the Julian Alps in northeastern Italy, Gemona has built a strong reputation for delivering diverse and tactical racing conditions. Pilots launch from Monte Cuarnan, approximately 900 meters above the valley floor, with task routes that can extend deep into the Alps or sweep south across the Friuli plains—sometimes within the same race.

This unique combination of mountain and flatland flying provides task setters with remarkable flexibility while rewarding versatile pilots. Alpine ridge running, transitions to the plains, and multiple route options mean that victory often depends on strategic decision-making as much as raw speed. Consistent thermals and varied terrain have established Gemona as one of the most respected destinations on the World Cup circuit.

Gemona has previously hosted World Cup events in 2016, 2018, and 2021 (following the 2020 postponement). Organizers emphasize the venue’s blend of fair racing conditions and spectator-friendly setup. The official goal field lies close to the town center, bringing the competition back into Gemona at the conclusion of each task.

The opening round is expected to draw many of the world’s elite competition pilots, including approximately 20 AA-rated competitors, alongside newcomers eager to make their mark on the international scene.

Proper gear organization is essential for competition pilots traveling to events like the World Cup. A quality Fast Pack Bag helps pilots efficiently pack and transport their wings between tasks, while a Concertina Bag ensures wing protection during transit and storage.

The Paragliding World Cup Association will provide live tracking, results, and daily reports throughout the competition. The 2026 season promises exciting racing action as pilots battle for early season points.
