Paragliding Community Rallies After Devastating Roldanillo Earthquake

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and at least two people killed in Roldanillo, Colombia, following a powerful earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday 10 August. The international paragliding community is now rallying to support the town that has welcomed thousands of pilots over the years.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar, around 60km north of Roldanillo — one of the world’s best-known paragliding destinations. While the town was badly affected, the number of casualties was mercifully lower than first feared.

Local pilot and competition organiser Lucho Jimenez told Cross Country that around 400 homes have been completely destroyed in Roldanillo alone, with a further 1,000 suffering damage ranging from severe to minor. Much of the town remains without electricity or internet, and many supermarkets and pharmacies are closed.

Colombian pilots have launched fundraising campaigns, and by Wednesday evening donations had reached close to €30,000 and US$20,000. The immediate goal is to provide 500 families with basic supplies for two weeks. Organisers also hope to fund temporary roofing and help with essential structural repairs so families can remain on their properties.

“Roldanillo is much more than a place on the map,” the appeal states. “It is a community that has welcomed visitors, athletes, pilots and friends from around the world with extraordinary warmth. Today, this community needs our solidarity in return.”

For pilots who travel the world to fly, a reliable Fast Pack Bag is essential kit for carrying gear safely between destinations.

If you wish to support the relief efforts, please search for local fundraising initiatives or contact Roldanillo-based organisations directly.
