Niviuk have unveiled details of their Rocket R, a high-performance submarine-style harness aimed at competition pilots seeking maximum efficiency and aerodynamics.
Aerodynamic Design
“The shape of the Rocket R has not only been optimised for aerodynamics and stability, but its design also minimises seams and deformations, creating a perfectly smooth, taut, crease-free surface,” say Niviuk.
This is the holy grail of competition harness design — a surface that stays clean and aerodynamic throughout all phases of flight, from slow thermalling to high-speed transitions.
Nitinol Structure
Nitinol (a shape-memory alloy) has been used to maintain internal pressure and the rigidity of the harness. This ensures it “maintains a uniform and stable shape even in thermals and turbulence” — a critical advantage when you’re racing at the highest level.
Unlike traditional harness designs that can deform or collapse in rough air, the nitinol structure keeps the Rocket R’s submarine shape intact regardless of conditions.

Additionally, an extra foot pad can be mounted on the footplate, ensuring an optimal position even for pilots with shorter legs.

The sleeves offer maximum freedom of movement without deforming the pod, thus minimising drag throughout all phases of flight.
This is a key design consideration — a harness that restricts pilot movement or deforms when the pilot shifts weight will create drag and reduce performance. The Rocket R’s sleeve design allows full freedom while maintaining the clean aerodynamic profile.
