Wanderbird Returns to Kitzbuhel and Announces Werfenweng Date for 2026

Wanderbird, the community-focused hike-and-fly race series, has announced two Austrian events for 2026. The first returns to Kitzbuhel on 10 July, and the second heads to Werfenweng on 7 August, south of Salzburg.
The series was founded by former Red Bull X-Alps athlete Paul Guschlbauer with the aim of making hike-and-fly welcoming and educational for pilots of all levels. “Wanderbird offers a unique hike-and-fly experience that combines community building, training, racing with personal growth and independent decisions in harmony with nature,” say the organisers.
Kitzbuhel, best known as a world-famous ski resort, hosted last year’s Wanderbird event and the start of Red Bull X-Alps. Between the legendary Streif slopes and the Kitzbüheler Horn, pilots will find ideal terrain for the hike-and-fly format.
Three entry categories are available — Fun, Tour and Hero — catering to those simply looking for an enjoyable experience right through to pilots wanting a competitive challenge.
Werfenweng is centred around Bischling, one of the most reliable flying sites in the Salzburg region. Set against the limestone walls of the Tennengebirge and blessed with dependable thermals, the location offers a stunning backdrop for competition flying. It is also home to Hohenwerfen Castle, the medieval fortress that featured in the classic film Where Eagles Dare.
Registrations are still open for both events.
